Blankets & Blessings

It was almost midnight when Kanak parked her car near the road and stepped out.

β€œCome out, Noor. It’s not that cold. And anyway, we’re in Jaipur, not Kashmir,” Kanak said with a smirk.

β€œI hope you know that you’re insane. It’s February! I don’t even know what the hell we’re doing here,” Noor replied, shivering.

β€œOpen the back door and help me carry it,” Kanak instructed.

When Noor opened the back door and saw what was inside, her eyes widened. β€œWhat the hell… When did you buy all these blankets? Is this your idea of adventure?”

β€œShh… stop yelling. People are sleeping here. Can’t you see?” Kanak said, lowering her voice. β€œNow follow me.”

People were sleeping on the footpath. Some didn’t have anything to cover themselves. Others were using torn old blankets. A woman lay on the ground with her baby wrapped up beside her. Quietly, the two girls started placing warm, new blankets over each sleeping figure.

An old woman stirred as she felt the warmth. She looked at them in surprise, then smiled and said, β€œYou are like God for us.”

β€œNo, I’m not God… just remember me in your prayers,” Kanak replied gently.

Once they finished, the girls returned to the car.

β€œWhen did you think of all this?” Noor asked.

β€œThis morning. When you asked me, β€˜What’s the plan for tomorrow?’” Kanak replied with a smile.

β€œWe need blessings in life. And when they come from someone’s heart, they actually work. They can’t afford blankets like us, but we should if we can do something. I feel really good after doing this. I hope you do too,” Kanak added. β€œBesides, we need blessings to balance our sins.”

β€œI agree,” Noor said, a little stunned but clearly moved.

β€œBy the way… happy birthday, Kanak,” she added.

The two of them fell asleep later that night under their own blankets, but this time, they were covered in something more than warmthβ€”peace.
