She sat on the couch, holding a glass of wine, lost in thought about her next story. The party was almost over when someone called her name from behind.
βVartika?β
It was her friend, Alisha.
βWhy are you sitting here alone? And whereβs your man?β Alisha asked.
Vartika smiled and pointed toward the corner where a group of people stood, laughing.
βIβll never understand you,β Alisha said, lowering her voice. βHow can you never feel jealous?β
βNo, why should I?β Vartika replied calmly. βPeople get jealous when theyβre afraid of losing someone. But I donβt feel that way. I know he loves me the way he looks at meβ¦ Ah, that looks like I can feel it. And anyway, this is what happens when you date a handsome man.β She winked.
Amandeep Singh β Vartikaβs boyfriend. Handsome, tall, and well-built, with a quiet charm that always drew attention, even back in college. His decency and kindness had their own gravity. Vartika, on the other hand, 5’7″, confident, and beautiful, had an energy that made people pause. Her directness intimidated most boys, but not Amandeep. College was where they had first fallen in love.
βAnd what if he leaves you someday?β Alisha asked.
βItβs possible,β Vartika said. βFalling out of love is normal. Love is a feeling, and feelings are temporary. You canβt force someone to stay. If they want to leave, they will with or without your permission. Honestly, I donβt want anyone in my life who doesnβt belong there. If someone doesnβt love me, itβs better they leave. Itβll hurt, yesβ¦ but leaving is still better than cheating.β
Alisha sighed. βWhen did you land on this planet?β
Vartika chuckled, and the two burst into laughter.
